In 1969 she left the Panthers and quit high school after having been to Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She started performing in small groups around the Chicago region, first with Cash McCall's group Lyfe which included her then-boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka Khan and Hassan were married in the year 1970.
