Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic as well as a public speaker, and Canadian. Feminist Frequency is a site with video and an online blog looking at the portrayals of female characters in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian and an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in the pop culture. In her efforts to dispel the myths that are associated with females in popular culture, she works to highlight issues related to the targeted harassment of women and the other marginalized groups of individuals in the internet environment. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in social and political thinking at York University. As a public speaker, she's highly sought after and has given talks at TEDxWomenXOXO and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. She has been interested in the gender issue and feminist movements at a young age. In 2009, while still studying at university, she created her Feminist Frequency site. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s with a dream to develop an online series which would explore how gender is represented in games. However, she became victimized by online harassment. However the attack could not deter her instead it was a boost to her determination as a feminist critic of media. She has won numerous awards in recognition of her many significant contributions to the world of feministism. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit focused on the portrayal of women within pop cultural and the narratives that surround them.
